Christmas Romances: What I’m Reading Now
There are a zillion Christmas romances out there. Nothing for it but to wade in and read what I can read. I’m on the hunt for blazing hearths, hot toddies, and the scent of pine to inspire warm and fuzzy love stories. And let’s not forget the mistletoe.
Christmas Romances: A Christmas Gift by Sue Moorcroft
Sue Moorcroft is a popular British romance writer, and I found her latest story, A Christmas Gift, charming.
It’s set in the village of Middledip, with all the small town dynamics. The hero, Joe, and the heroine, Georgine, were sweethearts there in high school, and their relationship ended abruptly and badly. Now, years later, they meet up again in the village as adults. Georgine has experienced a riches to rags trajectory, while Joe has gone from rags to riches.
Georgine teaches at the newly-established Performing Arts College in Middledip, and all her efforts are directed toward making sure the holiday production, A Very Kerry Christmas, Uncle Jones, is a great success. More I won’t say in order not to spoil the plot. However, I can say that Moorcroft takes us behind the scenes in the world of music, both pre-professional and professional.
A Christmas Gift has good holiday atmosphere. The emotional backstories of the two main characters that are revealed as they find their way to one another again make for a satisfying read.
Christmas Romances: Others?
Well, that’s it for me.
One of my favorite quotes from Jane Austen is: “If the heroine of one novel be not patronized by the heroine of another, from whom can she expect protection and regard?” Northanger Abbey
Her idea: A novelist has no business creating a character who criticizes another novelist’s creation.
Following Austen’s good manners, I won’t criticize another author’s work in a novel, and I won’t do it in my blog. So I’m not going to mention the many Christmas romances I tried … and didn’t quite make it through. After ten disappointments, I gave up.
My apologies to the writers of all the really good Christmas romances out there that I would have wanted to promote.
